The Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize is an international prize which is awarded annually by the Norwegian Nobel Committee according to guidelines laid down in Alfred Nobel's will.

Whereas the other prizes are awarded by specialist committees based in Sweden, the Peace Prize is awarded by a committee appointed by the Norwegian Storting. According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize is to go to whoever "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses". The prize includes a medal, a personal diploma, and a large sum of prize money (currently 10 million Swedish crowns).

The Prize is awarded at a ceremony in the Oslo City Hall on December 10, the date on which Alfred Nobel died.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2010 to Liu Xiaobo for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has long believed that there is a close connection between human rights and peace. Such rights are a prerequisite for the “fraternity between nations” of which Alfred Nobel wrote in his will.

For over two decades, Liu Xiaobo has been a strong spokesman for the application of fundamental human rights also in China. He took part in the Tiananmen protests in 1989; he was a leading author behind Charter 08, the manifesto of such rights in China which was published on the 60th anniversary of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 10th of December 2008. The following year, Liu was sentenced to eleven years in prison and two years’ deprivation of political rights for “inciting subversion of state power”. Liu has consistently maintained that the sentence violates both China’s own constitution and fundamental human rights.

The campaign to establish universal human rights also in China is being waged by many Chinese, both in China itself and abroad. Through the severe punishment meted out to him, Liu has become the foremost symbol of this wide-ranging struggle for human rights in China.

Martti Ahtisaari

Alle konflikter og kriger er menneskeskapte. Derfor kan de også løses, fastslår årets vinner av Nobels fredspris, finske Martti Ahtisaari. I takketalen som han holdt i Oslo Rådhus onsdag, rettet Ahtisaari samtidig tydelig og skarp kritikk mot verdenssamfunnets manglende evne og vilje til å løse og stoppe pågående kriser og konflikter, spesielt i Midtøsten.
Foran kongeparet, kronprinsparet og den norske regjeringen takket han dypt for tildelingen av Nobels fredspris, som han omtalte som «den høyeste ære» som kan tildeles personer som arbeider med internasjonal konfliktløsning.
– Kriger og konflikter er ikke uunngåelige. De er forårsaket av mennesker. Det er alltid interesser som fremmes gjennom krig. Derfor kan de som har makt og innflytelse også stoppe dem, sa Ahtisaari i sin tale i Oslo Rådhus onsdag.
– Fred er et spørsmål om vilje, fortsatte Ahtisaari.
– Alle konflikter kan løses, og det finnes ingen unnskyldninger for å la dem fortsette i uendelighet.
– Det er ganske enkelt utålelig at voldelige konflikter unndrar seg løsning i tiår, skaper umålbare menneskelige lidelser og forhindrer økonomisk og sosial utvikling.
Han fastslo at FN er den riktige rammen for internasjonalt fredsarbeid, men kritiserte medlemslandene for å pålegge organisasjonen store og krevende oppgaver uten å gi den midlene til å gjøre arbeidet. Han tok også til orde for å gi kvinner en mer framtredende plass i fredsarbeid.
Ahtisaari gikk også ut med en innstendig oppfordring til verden, og spesielt USAs påtroppende president Barack Obama, om å gripe fatt i Midtøsten-konflikten og løse den. Konfliktene har pågått så lenge i området at mange har begynt å betrakte dem som uløselige, sa Ahtisaari.
– Jeg deler ikke den oppfatningen. Alle kriser, inkludert krisen i Midtøsten, kan løses, fastslo han, og tilføyde at det vil kreve bidrag fra alle parter i området.
– Jeg håper USAs nye president, som blir tatt i ed neste måned, vil prioritere Midtøsten høyt i sitt første år i embetet, sa Ahtisaari. Han kom dermed med en indirekte kritikk av forgjengeren George W. Bush som først begynte å arbeide med Midtøsten i det siste året.
Også EU, Russland og FN må være seriøst engasjert, slik at en løsning kan finnes «fra Israel og Palestina til Irak og Iran».
– Hvis vi vil ha varige resultater, må vi se på hele regionen, understreket fredsprisvinneren.
– Hele verdenssamfunnets troverdighet står på spill, fortsatte han.
– Vi kan ikke fortsette år etter år og ganske enkelt late som vi gjør noe for å bedre situasjonen i Midtøsten. Vi må også få resultater.
Ahtisaari avsluttet også med sterke ord:
– Vi bør ikke godta noen unnskyldninger fra dem ved makten. Fred er et spørsmål om vilje sa han til stående applaus fra salen.
– Det jeg føler nå, kan bare sammenlignes med gleden jeg har følt når jeg ser forandringene som fred bringer i folks liv, sa den tidligere finske presidenten etter å ha mottatt medalje og diplom fra Nobelkomiteens leder Ole Danbolt Mjøs.
Ahtisaari minnet om at han selv, bare to år gammel, ble rammet av krig da Sovjetunionen og Nazi-Tyskland ble enige om å innlemme finske Karelen i Sovjetunionen. Barndommens opplevelser bidro sterkt til hans engasjement for fredsarbeid.

Nobels Fredspris 2008; Fakkeltoget

Jeg, Gunhild (min yngste datter) og venninne Guri klare til å gå i fakkeltog fra Stortorvet.

Sara og Lisa, døtre av gode venner, var også møtt frem for å gå i fakkeltoget. Koselig å se at travle studenter tar seg tid til slike gjøremål i en ellers travel eksamenstid :-)
Glassmagasinet hadde utallige snøkrystaller som pynt på veggen ut mot Stortorvet.
